Breaking News: According to ESPN, running back Chris Johnson has been signed by the New York Jets to a two year deal with a base value of $8 million. Back in 2009, Chris Johnson eclipsed the 2,000 yard mark, while also averaging 5.9 yards per carry. Since his peak as a sophomore running back in the league, Johnson's productivity has seemingly decreased over time; however, New York's recent addition of quarterback Michael Vick will create a devastatingly fast offensive unit in the AFC East. Hopefully, Johnson's signing can dethrone the New England Patriots from atop the AFC East power ranking, as they have won 10 of the past 11 AFC East titles.

NFL Free Agency: Day 4 Recap
Hakeem Knicks Signs with Colts: After Reggie Wayne missed the majority of the 2013 season due to injury, the Colts realized that quarterback Andrew Luck was in desperate need of talent at the wide receiver position. The contract will only be for one year, but if things go well in Indy next season, one can expect that the contract would be renegotiated between both sides.
Steve Smith Joins Ravens: After Steve Smith's career with the Carolina Panthers ended in an ugly fashion, Smith will now play for the Baltimore Ravens for the next three seasons. That being said, the Ravens are scheduled to play Carolina at some point in 2014, although it is yet to be announced where the game will be played.
Cortland Finnegan to Play for Dolphins: Cortland Finnegan spent just two years in St. Louis before becoming a free agent, and now, he will find a new destination for the third time in four years. Finnegan played in just seven games last season with 1 interception, no sacks, and no forced fumbles. The deal is reportedly worth $11 million for two years.
Michael Oher Leaves Baltimore for Tennessee: Michael Oher, a player known by many for his interesting story portrayed in the film The Blind Side, has decided to leave Baltimore and will now be joining the Tennessee Titans. Although he is not considered to be one of the league's best offensive tackles, his celebrity status makes this transaction a notable storyline.
Patriots Officially Sign Brandon Browner: Despite his history with performance enhancing drugs, the Patriots were willing to take the risk with this cornerback from Seattle. Browner's suspension will carry over into the first four games of the season, but once he is back, Browner will play alongside recently-signed corner Darrelle Revis.

NFL Free Agency: Day 2 Recap
Darrelle Revis Signs with Patriots: After the Denver Broncos dominated the first day of free agency, Bill Belicheck retaliated by making a big signing of his own. Darrelle Revis is meant to serve as Aqib Talib's replacement, but they are not taking a huge risk because the contract is for just one season ($12 million). Revis' disappointing season in 2013 clearly drove down the price of his yearly salary, so a successful season in 2014 may allow Revis to earn a new contract for more money. With a rematch between Denver and New England seemingly unavoidable, it will be interesting to see how these new teams will match up against one another.
DeMarcus Ware Signs with Denver: Not only did Denver sign Pro-Bowlers Aqib Talib and TJ Ward in this year's free agency, but the addition of DeMarcus Ware today will clearly enhance a previously mediocre defense. Ware totaled 117 sacks over the course of his career, which is the most sacks by any player in a nine year span, only behind Hall-of-Famer Reggie White; however, Ware had the lowest sack total of his career last season with six, and also had no forced fumbles for the first time of his career.
Eric Decker Now A New York Jet: Close to midnight on day two of the NFL's free agency, it was announced that Eric Decker will play for the New York Jets next season, where he will make 36.25 million over the course of five years. It comes as no surprise that the Broncos were unable to re-sign Decker following their recent acquisitions (Talib, Ward, and Ware).
Golden Tate Strikes Deal with Lions: Throughout Calvin Johnson's career, he has never played alongside a game-changing wide-receiver, which obviously puts a lot of pressure on Megatron to succeed. Now that the Lions have signed Golden Tate to a five-year deal worth $31 million, Matthew Stafford will have another wide receiver to choose from, which may draw potential double teams away from Calvin.
Steve Smith No Longer a Carolina Panther: After spending thirteen years in Carolina, today, we were told that Steve Smith will no longer be a pat of the Panthers' organization. The date of his release has yet to be announced, but there will clearly be many teams looking to sign the future Hall-of-Famer.
Jared Allen May Leave the NFL: Jared Allen said today that he would be willing to leave the NFL if he is not offered the right amount of money. Earlier in the day, Denver supposedly offered Allen 3-years, $30 million, but instead, this offer was accepted by DeMarcus Ware. Now, Allen will have to wait for an equal amount of money, or else he will retire from the NFL.
Other notable story lines: Seattle Seahawks released defensive end Chris Clemens, Josh McCown signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Brandon Weeden was cut by the Cleveland Browns.

In @Revis24's first and only season with the @TBBuccaneers, they improved from LAST in pass defense to 17th.

The Best Rivalry in the NFL?
On the eve of the 2013 NFL free agency, two teams in the same division enhanced their rosters by adding two players nearly simultaneously. Percy Harvin and Anquan Boldin have found new homes along the west coast, with Boldin strapping on a San Francisco jersey, and Harvin playing in rainy Seattle for 2013. Both players are pro-bowlers with plenty of experience, and have the potential to strengthen their new teams drastically. Several years ago, many criticized the NFC West for being too weak a division; now, the west has transformed into one of the most competitive places to play in the league. The two powerhouses of the present-day NFC West are the San Francisco 49ers and the Seattle Seahawks. Though the rivalry between the two was already relatively heated, will the two trades form the biggest rivalry in the NFL?
The definition of the term rivalry is a "competition for the same objective or for superiority in the same field." By definition, when Seattle shows up to play San Francisco in 2013, the match up will be marked as a rivalry game. Historically speaking, the two teams are almost split down the middle in terms of wins, where Seattle has won 14 games against San Francisco, compared to the 49ers who have won 13. A victory during the regular season will propel them towards the NFC West crown. Already media stations across the country are hyping up the next meeting between San Francisco and Seattle. The two teams are very similar, where their roster is made up of very talented, young weapons on the offensive and defensive side of the ball.
San Francisco's Super Bowl run ended when they failed to convert on a fourth and goal with less than two minutes left. In order to ensure a second straight appearance to the big game, much has been done in order to fill any holes that need to be patched. Colin Kaepernick and his running back duo is one of the most feared ground games in the NFL; however, the passing game was in desperate need of a strong wide receiver to lead the pack. Vernon Davis' chemistry with Kaepernick solidified over the course of the playoffs, but Michael Crabtree and Randy Moss unsuccessfully gave Kaepernick the weapons he needed to succeed. Boldin has the size of a tight end but the speed of a wide receiver, a perfect match up with lock down corner back Richard Sherman of Seattle. The defense lost safety Dashon Goldson, and has done nothing to replace the All-Pro. Otherwise, San Francisco's defense remains elite when it comes to defending the rush and the pass.
Seattle's off season grade is an "A+" with the signings of defensive ends Michael Bennett and Cliff Avril, along with wide receiver Percy Harvin. Russell Wilson's rookie season earned him a lot of praise from around the league, especially when he took down the Redskins in the first round, and almost upset Atlanta in the divisional round the following week. Percy Harvin will be Seattle's number one wide receiver on the roster, and Wilson now has the option of handing the ball off to Marshawn Lycnh or WR Percy Harvin. Seattle's defense caught everyone off-guard last season with their dominating performance against top teams. Michael Bennet and Cliff Avril clearly creates the best pass rush in the league when adding their talents to sophomore pass rusher Bruce Irvin.
The Seattle Seahawks fan base is well represented at home games, where CenturyLink field has been credited as being the loudest arena in the NFL. San Francisco will look to take down their new rival at home, who went undefeated in 2012 in their own stadium. In fact, Seattle destroyed San Francisco at home by a grand total of 42-13. The 49ers' emotional coach John Harbuagh would love to get revenge on the road and rid themselves of that embarrassing 2012 loss. The competition in the NFC West will be fierce, and when these two teams possibly meet in the NFC Championship game, millions will tune in to watch.

NFL Report Update: Michael Turner
Breaking News: Earlier today, the Atlanta Falcons released veteran running back Michael Turner in order to free up cap space. In his five years playing for Atlanta, Michael Turner broke the Falcons' franchise touchdown record with 60 rushing scores. Michael Turner believes he has a lot left in the tank, but at age 31, Turner may have one or two quality seasons before his body wears down. Along with Turner, defensive end John Abraham and cornerback Dunta Robinson were cut from the Falcons' roster.

Top 10 Free Agents: Joe Flacco
1. Joe Flacco: There is no disputing Joe Flacco deserves to be number one on this countdown, seeing that he was able to lead the Baltimore Ravens to their second Super Bowl title. Flacco will not let their quarterback leave Maryland, where he can potentially make Baltimore's offense the highest scoring group in the league. Flacco's arm allows him to throw it deep with wide receivers such as Torrey Smith, Jacoby Jones and Anquan Boldin. Baltimore's defense is losing several key veterans to retirement or free agency, which is why Baltimore must sign Flacco to the big contract he rightfully deserves.
Top 10 Free Agents: Cliff Avril
2. Cliff Avril: Avril has thrived in Detroit ever since the defensive line added Ndamukong Suh to the roster. Even though Cliff Avril is looking for a massive contract, he saw a dip in productivity last season, where his sack total fell from 11 sacks in 2011 to 9.5 sacks in 2012. Avril certainly does not deserve the same contract as Mario Williams, which is why he will eventually stay in Detroit.

Top 10 Free Agents: Michael Johnson
3. Michael Johnson: Third year defensive end Michael Johnson had a breakout year in 2012. His 11.5 sacks saw a large increase compared to 6 sacks in 2011. Along with his 52 tackles, Johnson picked off a pass in a game against Cleveland. Cincinnati's defense has shown signs of improvement, and they will need him back if they wish to stay in Super Bowl contention. At 6-foot-7 and 255 pounds, Michael Johnson has the size needed to succeed in the NFL.
Top 10 Free Agents: Reggie Bush
4. Reggie Bush: It took Reggie Bush a long time before he developed into the NFL star he was supposed to be as a rookie on the New Orleans Saints. Last year marked the first time Bush was able to rush for over 1,000 yards in a single season, and he accomplished this feat needing just 216 attempts. Within the past two years, Bush averages a whopping 4.7 yards per carry, but he is still not earning the same amount of money as Adrian Peterson or Chris Johnson. Reggie Bush has said he wants to return to Miami in 2013, but several other teams such as the Detroit Lions are trying to heavily recruit him. Bush will not have more than 250 attempts if he moves to Detroit, but I believe he can have an important impact on wherever he chooses to play in 2013.
Top 10 Free Agents: Ryan Clady
5. Ryan Clady: Ryan Clady proved to be one of the most valuable players on the Denver Broncos, seeing that he successfully protected Peyton Manning's blind side. Clady and the Denver offensive line allowed just 21 sacks in 2012, ranking second in the National Football League. The three-time All-Pro underwent surgery on his shoulder this past offseason, but many still believe the Denver Broncos will use their franchise tag on Clady.
Top 10 Free Agents: Mike Wallace
6. Mike Wallace: Mike Wallace missed just one game in 2012, but his numbers dipped dramatically when comparing his statistics to 2011. Wallace dropped a large amount of passes last season, and therefore, his receptions fell from 72 in 2011 to 64 in 2012. Wallace will likely never eclipse the 100 reception mark in his career, but he makes up for it with his incredible speed. Wallace's speed allows him to fly by opposing teams safeties in order to make a game-changing reception. Mike Wallace is showing sings of improvement in his route running, as he tries to become more well-rounded so he is not used solely on streaks down field. For those who can't afford Greg Jennings this off season, Mike Wallace is a cheaper choice who could blossom into a more balanced receiver.
Top 10 Free Agents: Aquib Talib
7. Aquib Talib: Aquib Talib has the potential to be one of the best cornerbacks in the league, but Talib always gets into trouble, whether it be off the field problems or nagging injuries, Talib tends to be labeled as inconsistent. However, when Talib is on his game and ready to play, he can shut down any team's go-to wide receiver. New England has several big names that they hope to re-sign in the offseason, and Talib is one of those players. He surely is a gamble, but if he puts his heart to it, Talib can be the center of any team's defense.
Sunday, February 17, 2013
Top 10 Free Agents: Dashon Goldson
8. Dashon Goldson: It is unclear whether or not the San Francisco 49ers will re-sign Dashon Goldson, who at 27 is currently entering the height of his pro career. The 49ers need all the help they can get at safety, but there is not enough cap room to ensure Goldson's signing. Goldson was named to back to back Pro Bowls, as well as an All-Pro team for his spectacular season in 2012. Clearly, Goldson was successful enough in order to lead his team into the Super Bowl, so other teams will be eager to scoop him up if San Francisco does not.
Top 10 Free Agents: Wes Welker
9. Wes Welker: Personally, I believe Wes Welker is one of the more overrated players in the league. Tom Brady is one of the best quarterbacks in the history of the game, so he makes Welker that much better. Teams will pay way too much for this wide receiver, who as of late has dropped several balls in key situations. Welker's inconsistent hands are still able to catch balls other wide receiver can't, and he is not afraid to take a hit in order to gain the extra yard. Team's who are looking for a wide receiver that may convert on 3rd and 5 should be eying Welker, but Welker is not worthy of big bucks unless he can reduce the amount of balls he drops.
Top 10 Free Agents: Brian Urlacher
10. Brian Urlacher: Urlacher clearly is not the same at age 34, seeing that he can no longer pursue a ballcarrier the same way. His productivity has dipped, and an injury in 2012 will most likely hurt his value in the free agency. The main thing Urlacher brings to the table is leadership, as he can provide a team in need of leadership with a veteran containing plenty of playoff experience. Brian Urlacher has not recorded five or more sacks in a singe season since 2007, so teams will mainly be looking for a relatively dominant linebacker capable of defending passes and covering the middle of the field. It is likely Urlacher has just one or two years left in the tank, but Urlacher will most definitely give it his all on the field.
Top 10 NFL Free Agents
On March 12, the NFL free agency period will begin, allowing teams to forget about a disappointing 2012 season, and hopefully, become legitimate contenders for the Lombardi Trophy. Unfortunately, there is no golden prize in this year's free agency as there was last year with Peyton Manning. However, it only takes one player to put a franchise back on track. The NFL Report will rank the 10 best free agents that have the potential to be playing in a new uniform by the time September rolls around.
